No job too big or small – we have experience working in both the commercial and the private sector. McCall Construction Ltd are proud to offer both traditional plaster techniques and innovative spray services.

Creating the ‘perfect’ smooth finish

Skimming

Skimming is a technique which involves the application of a thin layer of plaster or joint compound over existing surfaces, such as textured walls or uneven drywall. Skimming is an effective way to hide imperfections, cracks, or bumps, giving the walls or ceilings a fresh and uniform appearance.  Once dried, the skimmed surface can be sanded and painted to achieve the desired aesthetic. Skimming is a popular choice for those seeking to rejuvenate their living spaces without the need for extensive demolition or reinstallation of new materials. Plastering a wall is all about creating a decorative surface that improves the durability of the structure, and conceals the original masonry. A skimmed wall will ‘finish’ a room and provide the appropriately prepared canvas for the colours and textures to be applied. It’s a traditional craft and one which many of our domestic clients rate very highly.

With imagination we can create your own unique designs – however there are many established textures and patterns which have proved popular over the years. Points to consider when deciding on Artex for a surface are: uneven surfaces or poor joints are better disguised with a deep covering of Artex. For large or high ceilings a heavy texture can be more effective, use soft textures or lacing of finish on walls. Experienced, skilled techniques

Rough & Set

The plastering term ‘Rough & Set’ refers to the traditional style of plastering sometimes known as wet plastering – This requires a wet undercoat plaster such as sand and cement or browning/bonding coat which troweled onto the walls usually around 11mm thick. When the undercoat plaster has set to a semi firm state the skim coat is then applied.  This is a highly skilled process, it requires the wet coat to be screeded off level with a straight edge to a tolerance of 3mm –  5mm. It can be a mixing heavy and messy process but the advantages are – it gives much greater sound density than boards and it’s an excellent insulator.

Plaster-Boarding

The process of plasterboarding typically begins with measuring and cutting the plaster boards to fit the desired area. These panels are then secured to the framework using screws or nails. Care is taken to ensure that the boards are properly aligned and tightly fastened to create a sturdy and even surface.

Once the plasterboards are installed, the joints between them are covered with joint tape and joint compound. This process, known as taping and jointing, helps create a seamless appearance by concealing the gaps between the boards. The joint compound is applied and smoothed over the tape, followed by sanding to create a smooth and level finish. Plasterboarding offers several advantages, such as faster installation compared to traditional plastering methods, better fire resistance, and improved sound insulation. It also provides a versatile surface for decorative treatments, such as skimming or applying textured finishes.

A modern and sleek aesthetic

Microcement

Microcement, also known as microtopping or microconcrete, is a versatile decorative coating material used for interior and exterior surfaces. It is a thin layer of cement-based compound that can be applied to various substrates like concrete, wood, tiles, or even metal. Popular for its seamless and smooth finish, giving surfaces a contemporary and industrial look. It is commonly used to create a polished concrete effect, resembling the appearance of concrete but with added flexibility and a thinner application. The material can be tinted in a wide range of colors, allowing for customization and design versatility.

Microcement is valued for its durability, as it is resistant to water, heat, and wear. It can be used in various areas of a building, including floors, walls, countertops, showers, and furniture. Its seamless nature makes it a suitable choice for both residential and commercial spaces.
